Whenever the Holy Spirit - the spirit of Pentecost- falls on a group of people it is paradoxically to unite them but also to open them to diversity. The life of Ignatius of Loyola, a Spaniard from the Basque country born in 1491, and the foundation of the Company of Jesus, the « Jesuits » are good examples of this movement of the Spirit, this breath of Pentecost.
Jérôme Nadal, Ignatius' secretary wrote of him: « He let himself be led easily – with taste, with joy – on a path he didn't know.
Our film this month tells the story of Ignatius' adventure of the spirit which led him by small steps to found a religious congregation, the Company of Jesus. Today, 450 years after his death, the Company brings together several thousand Jesuits around the world. Many other movements and communities also recieve graces from this « Ignatian » spirituality.
In Ignatius' constant search to follow a poor and humble Jesus, God intervened and taught him through visions, events, His Word and the Church, leading him from transformation to transformation.
- In 1521, at PAMPELUNE, the discovery of the DISCERNMENT of SPIRITS is made.
During the battle of Pampelune in the Navarre region a cannon ball breaks Ignatius' leg and with it his dreams of being a great knight and solider. While recovering, at the age of 30, he discovers that God speaks to him through the « diversity of spirits » in his soul: the contradictory alternance between superficial pleasure and profound true joy. As a result of this experience he decides to imitate the saints and go to Jerusalem as a wandering pilgrim.
- In 1522, at MANRESE God instructs him as does a teacher with a student. After a time of purification he experiences a threefold pentecost in the vision of Cardoner. Here he understands his vocation, TO SAVE SOULS, and announce the crucified and resurrected Jesus Christ to the world.
- In 1523, he leaves again for JERUSALEM IN THE STEPS OF JESUS the poor and humble one and learns how to understand the will of God through events. Not being able to stay in Jerusalem he continues to search for God and goes to study in Paris. Here he is lead to share with other young students his experiences and he gives the « spiritual exercises ». This is the start of the small community of « friends in the Lord ».
- In 1537, the Company leave for VENICE, once again on the way to Jerusalem. However blocked on the way they choose to go to Rome instead and present themselves to the Pope who sends them out to preach in the different cities of Italy. In 1539, they have a true COMMUNITY DELIBERATION where they arrive at the unanimous decision to stay UNITED IN DISPERSION. After doubly re-enforcing their unity with a vow of obedience to the Pope and the choice of Ignatius as leader of the Company, they are then able to go into the entire world to announce Christ to humanity.
- In 1539, at ROME, Ignatius spends the last 15 years of his life staying in contact with his missionary companions on different continents – there are 1000 Jesuits at the time of his death- by writing more than 8000 letters. As well as writing the constitutions of the Company he continues to share his experience, that of ‘FINDING GOD IN ALL THINGS’ and in all events.
