“Madam, your son is someone special.” His mother, Antonia Acutis, heard that innumerable times. “Special”, yes, but why? Did Carlo have some special particular secret to distinguish him from everyone else? No, Carlo’s secret has a name: his name is Jesus. From the day of his confirmation Jesus became his Friend with a capital ‘F’. And a friend for good. Carlo, who was passionate about new technology, was one of the first to use Internet to transmit the message of the Gospel. Carlo was the Jesus-geek, the cyber-apostle, and Pope Francis wants to give him to the young generations as a model. He died at the age of 15 from a devastating leucemia. Carlo Acutis, this very special boy, will be beatified at Assisi on October 10th 2020.

1. Carlo had experienced the beginnings of Internet, and he was one of the first to use the new technology in the service of the faith.

Lord, let us follow him in being daring and imaginative. Let us not be afraid to take hold of all the tools available to us to talk of your love and to transmit the gospel.

2. The world of computers, depending on how we use it, can be a place of solitude and manipulation. But it can also be used for all that’s good and for revealing beauty, as Carlo did.

Lord, make us instruments of the beauty which you want the world to receive. Let us be careful to emphasise what’s good in human beings.

3. The coronavirus epidemic which has hit the entire world has obliged a large number of the planet’s inhabitants to stay confined in their homes. And it is through this that Internet and the social networks have shown their incredible power to strengthen communion and to encourage solidarity.

Lord, let us continue on this path, able to discern the signs of the times. Strengthen our fraternal ties, continue to weave this prayer net which you have begun.

And may we all together, wherever we are, constitute this invisible monastery where you desire to be present.
