In the heart of Brazil's Amazon rainforest, a nun called Dorothy Stang, made the protection of the poor and respect for creation her life's struggle. She died on 12 February 2005 at the age of 73, murdered by hired killers contracted by large landowners whose abuses she denounced. Her life continues to bear fruit today, inspiring many local initiatives for the protection of biodiversity when farming the land. Hers is an authentic witness to the commitment to 'integral ecology' advocated by Pope Francis in the encyclical Laudato Si'.

This film takes us to Anapu, in the Brazilian state of Pará, to meet those who knew Sr Dorothy, including her religious congregation - the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. Also Bishop Erwin Kräutler, who has been a bishop in the Amazon for 35 years, and locals who have implemented sustainable development programmes which Sr Dorothy started up.

Ce film est réalisé par la Communauté du Chemin Neuf via le réseau de international prière « Net for God ».

Fürbitte

Let us pray with Pope Francis (Extract from the 'Prayer for our Earth' from Laudato Si' § 246):

All-powerful God, you are present in the whole universe and in the smallest of your creatures. You embrace with your tenderness all that exists. Pour out upon us the power of your love, that we may protect life and beauty. Fill us with peace, that we may live as brothers and sisters, harming no one. O God of the poor, help us to rescue the abandoned and forgotten of this earth, so precious in your eyes. Bring healing to our lives, that we may protect the world and not prey on it, that we may sow beauty, not pollution and destruction. Praise be to you Oh Lord, Amen

Wort des Monats

The Gospel of Jean, chapter 12, verses 24 to 26a:

'In all truth I tell you, unless a wheat grain falls into the earth and dies, it remains only a single grain; but if it dies it yields a rich harvest. Anyone who loves their life loses it; anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me, must follow me, and my servant will be with me wherever I am'.

Jean 12: 24 - 26a
