How do Muslims see Mary? What does the Koran say about her? Can she help us walk together with those from different religions on a path of peace? <\/p>\n
This film does not aim to give a complete study of question of Mary in Islam. It simply gives Muslims – and those who know about Mary in the Koran and her place in Islam – an opportunity to speak.<\/p>\n
As the Koran provides the basis for the message of this film, it may be helpful to recall what this Book represents for Muslims. Islam emerged in the 7th century following the revelations the prophet Mohammed received directly from God over a period of 22 years. These revelations were passed on orally to his companions and are now contained in the Koran. For Muslim believers, this Sacred Book is therefore the actual word of God and their entire religion is founded on this \u201ctext that came down from heaven\u201d.<\/p>\n
So throughout this film, the story of Mary is told as it appears in the Koran. Two Surah – the 19th, which bears her name \u201cSurah Miriam\u201d, and the 3rd – tell us about her:
– Her parents: the Koran only gives the name of Mary’s father, Imran; her mother is simply referred to as \u201cthe wife of Imran\u201d.
– Her conception and birth \u201cprotected from all contact with Satan\u201d. (Surah 3:34)
-Her consecration in the Temple where her Lord graciously accepted her and where she grew up, entrusted to the care of Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist. (Surah 3:37)
– The conception and miraculous birth of Jesus, whom God calls: \u201cal-Masih\u201d \u201cIssa\u201d, \u201cSon of Mary\u201d (Surah 3:43-47; 19:16-36)
– The wonders and miracles worked by the Infant Jesus who defends his mother\u2019s reputation and proclaims his mission: \u201cI am the servant of God\u2026 God has made me a prophet.\u201d (Surah 19:26-34). Jesus has come to proclaim Islam: relinquishment and obedience to God.<\/p>\n
