Thank you Thaïs
This film is a beautiful and profound testimony of a French couple, Anne-Dauphine Julliand and her husband Loïc. They tell the life story of their little daughter Thaïs, and through this theyshow how much they received from her by listening to her heart and her soul.
In 2005 in Paris, Anne-Dauphine and Loïc were living an almost idyllic existence. Following their son, Gaspard, who was almost four, and their daughter, Thaïs, aged two, they were expecting a third child in mid-July. They had fulfilling careers and they loved each other deeply. In short, life was good to them… barring one small problem that had emerged that summer at the seaside, disrupting the perfect joy they sought. Looking at the footprints left in the wet sand by Thaïs' tiny feet, they noticed something strange about the way she walked: her big toe tended to bend outwards.
After a series of examinations, the doctors discovered that Thaïs was suffering from an incurable degenerative genetic disease called metachromatic leukodystrophy. There was no hope of a cure for Thaïs; she only had a few years, or even months to live! It was the day of her second birthday.
Their happiness was shattered and it was difficult to make plans for the future, especially as the baby they were expecting had a one in four chance of being affected as well!
How could they possibly be happy in this situation?
It was in the middle of this daily turmoil, faced with Thaïs' illness that they experienced moments of grace. Thaïs, throughout her decline, mysteriously became someone who transformed hearts, especially her parents' hearts. She became a 'teacher of life'.
While Thaïs gradually lost all her abilities: speech, sight, hearing, movement, she radiated a mysterious peace which transformed those around her. The illness ravaged her body but could not dominate her heart. Thaïs, by accepting her life as it was, teaches us about the way of the heart, the way of Love with a capital 'L'.
