It\u2019s from the extraordinary event that took place in Lyon, France, from 11th to 13th September 2005 \u2013 the XIXth international gathering for peace, \u2018Peoples and Religions\u2019- that this film provides a key to working for peace, to being a peace maker, where we live.<\/p>\n
At the initiative of the Sant\u2019 Egidio Community, a Community of Italian origin which is made up of over 50,000 members in 70 countries, 300 representatives from all the religions of the world met to pray, to speak together freely and to grow together to build peace between peoples and individuals. <\/p>\n
This gathering is part of a \u2018pilgrimage for peace\u2019 which the Sant\u2019 Egidio Community has supported since the 1980s. Every year they stop over in a city and organise this sort of gathering in order to promote the \u2018spirit of Assisi\u2019 \u2013 an expression coined by Pope John Paul II when, on 27th October 1986, he invited for the first time in history a gathering of leaders of all the world\u2019s religions to pray for peace in Assisi.<\/p>\n
The bridges built, these friendships through diversity, are a sign for our times, and for us who work towards Christian unity and peace in the world, we can hear the message that this extraordinary event brings us.
How is it possible that men and women meet, unite and work together for peace? What is the secret of this calling? What is the origin of the vocation that has the Sant\u2019 Egidio Community, which organises such gatherings?<\/p>\n
In this film, Andrea Riccardi, founder and leader of the Sant\u2019 Egidio Community, recounts the beginnings of the foundation of his Community and reveals the source of their calling: love of the poor. He explains that in showing solidarity by cooperating with the poor peoples of the world, they are led to being peacemakers and mediators for peace in several conflicts around the world.<\/p>\n
